What is Professional Floristry?

The Professional Floristry course is a self-paced online floristry course that teaches the core skills of a working florist: colour and design, flower identification and care, and hand-tied, foam and wired arrangements, through to wedding basics. A professional floristry kit is included. It suits beginners, home florists and career changers, and it adds small-business and social media training.

Course overview

Learn the craft the way florists work it

Ever bought a bouquet and wondered how the florist got it to hold its shape? Professional Floristry teaches you the techniques behind it: choosing and conditioning stems, building a spiral hand-tied bouquet, working in foam and chicken wire, and wiring delicate pieces like corsages. You practise every technique with your own kit, and your tutor marks the arrangements you build.

  • Design with colour and purpose – Use the colour wheel, colour schemes and the principles of balance, proportion and focal point to plan an arrangement before you cut a stem.
  • Know your flowers – Identify common floristry species, pick stems for quality, and condition them so they last.
  • Master the three core constructions – Build hand-tied bouquets and posies, base-medium arrangements in foam and chicken wire, and wired work such as corsages, buttonholes and flower crowns.
  • Get business-ready – Budget a wedding flower order, define your niche and brand, then work through business planning, bookkeeping and tax set-up in the Small Business Kickstarter.

Ready to make your first hand-tied bouquet? Your kit and your course are waiting.

Who this course is for

  • Complete beginners who love flowers and want to learn floristry properly, from tools and technique to design.
  • Career changers aiming for work in a florist shop, a garden-centre floristry counter or a flower wholesaler.
  • Home florists and makers who already sell a few bunches at markets or to friends, and want professional technique and the confidence to price their work.
  • Future business owners planning a home floristry studio, a market stall or an online flower business.

What you'll study

You'll start with the Student Induction and a short Floristry Student Induction, which get you set up on the learning platform. Then you'll work through three core modules.

Module 1: Professional Floristry FLP-401 (9 units)

The heart of the course. You'll move from floristry history and design theory to building every main type of arrangement, practising each technique with your kit.

  1. Introduction to Floristry – the industry, florist roles, the history and symbolism of flowers, career paths, and sourcing and buying stock.
  2. Design Principles, Tools & Materials – colour theory and colour psychology, the elements and principles of design, and setting up your tools and workspace.
  3. Flower Identification, Selection and Care – recognising common floristry species, choosing quality stems and conditioning them for longevity.
  4. Floral Design Techniques – core construction skills, including wiring and taping.
  5. Hand-tied Arrangements – spiral-technique bouquets and posies, finished and wrapped.
  6. Base Medium Arrangements – arrangements in floral foam and chicken wire, in vases, bowls, pots and wreath rings.
  7. Wired Arrangements – corsages, buttonholes and flower crowns.
  8. Wedding and Event Floristry – working to a theme and a client's brief, and budgeting wedding flowers.
  9. Business Fundamentals – finding your niche, building a brand story and logo, and presenting yourself professionally.

Module 2: Floristry Small Business Kickstarter (6 units)

Turn a floristry idea into a working plan, step by step, from first idea to opening day.

  1. Your Business – mind-map your idea and build a business plan with clear goals.
  2. Market Research – research your customers, your competitors and your local market.
  3. Preparing for business and putting plans into action – the practical set-up steps.
  4. Admin – Record Keeping/Bookkeeping – keep the records a small business needs.
  5. Accounting and Taxes – ABN, GST and tax basics for a small business in Australia.
  6. Start the business – the steps to launch.

Module 3: Floristry Social Media Marketing (5 interactive units)

A practical introduction to marketing a small business on social media, delivered as five short interactive units. You'll apply it to your own floristry work: showing off your arrangements and reaching new customers.

How you'll learn and be assessed

  • Hands-on, at home – you build real arrangements with your kit and locally bought stems, guided by video tutorials and ebooks, on any device.
  • Photo and video evidence – practical assessments (wiring and taping, hand-tied, base-medium and wired arrangements) are submitted as photos or video with written tasks. Your tutor marks each one and gives you personalised feedback.
  • Quizzes and self-assessed planning – short online quizzes check your knowledge, and the Small Business Kickstarter uses self-assessed tasks, so you finish with your own business plan.
  • Competency-based – if an arrangement isn't quite there yet, your tutor tells you what to adjust and you resubmit. There are no exams to sit in a centre.

What's in your floristry kit

A professional floristry kit is included and delivered to your door (tracking sent within about 3 weeks of enrolling). It includes secateurs, flower snips, rose stripper, pliers, floral and bind wire, floral foam bricks and a wreath ring, ceramic vase and pot, posy boxes, ribbons, wrapping papers and cello, pearl pins, chicken wire, cut-flower food, an apron and a floristry tool bag, plus a sketch pad and colour pencils. Fresh flowers and foliage aren't included. You'll source seasonal stems locally, and the course shows you how to choose and condition them.

Tailor your course with add-on modules

Make the course fit your plans. You can tailor Professional Floristry with add-on modules from our catalogue and pick up extra skills that match your business or career plans.

Horticulture 2 – Plant Data

Go deeper into plants: taxonomy and botanical names, edible and ornamental plant types, propagation, growing environments and the rules behind commercial horticulture. Know your flowers as plants: learn their botanical names and families, plus the propagation basics you'll need if you want to grow your own cut flowers.

Horticulture 3 – Health & Welfare of Plants

Diagnose and manage plant health: pests, diseases and weeds, natural and chemical controls, integrated pest management, environmental impacts and safe work practices. Useful if you sell potted plants alongside cut flowers, or grow your own stems, and need to spot problems before they reach a customer.

Ask a course consultant about adding modules when you enrol.

Career pathways and earning potential

Floristry skills are used in florist shops, garden centres, flower wholesalers and home studios, and the work is often flexible: 67% of Australian florists work part-time (Jobs and Skills Australia). Roles graduates often explore include:

  • Retail florist – making up everyday bouquets, arrangements and customer orders in a florist shop. Median $62,500 a year (advertised full-time salaries; typical $60k–$70k), SEEK.
  • Garden-centre or wholesale florist – preparing floral stock and arrangements for sale in a garden centre or flower wholesaler.
  • Floristry business owner – your own studio, market stall or online flower business, built around the niche you define.

Figures are advertised salaries (SEEK, Jora) or median full-time earnings (Jobs and Skills Australia), accessed October 2026. Pay varies with experience, location and employer. Figures are a guide only.

Some employers ask for the nationally accredited Certificate III in Floristry. This course is a non-accredited, practical grounding that also gives you a portfolio of your own work.

Frequently asked questions

No. Professional Floristry starts at the beginning, with the tools, the colour wheel and how to hold stems for a spiral bouquet. You don't need a shop job or a studio, just a clear bench at home and somewhere cool to keep your flowers.
